Faculty Development Programme on Data Miningwas organized at Shambhunath Institute of Engineering & Technology, Jhalwa, Allahabad from June 1-6, 2018 with the financial support of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-III), Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Uttar Pradesh. The objective of Faculty Development Programme on Data Mining was - • To train, refresh & enhance technical knowledge of participants about development of applications in the areas of Data Mining, Data Warehousing & Data Integration using various advanced tools. • To familiarize & understand the methodology of legacy database for data warehousing and data mining. • To derive business rules for decision support systems. Resource persons were senior faculty members from California State University, USA, Allahabad University, IIT-BHU, MNNIT, Allahabad and IIIT, Allahabad having rich experience of teaching, research & exposure of real-life projects in the field. Broad topics covered in the FDP were as follows: • Data Mining • Types of Data • Data Mining Implementation Process • Data Mining Techniques, Challenges of Implementation, Examples • Data Mining Tools • Data Mining Algorithms • Benefits & Disadvantages of Data Mining • Data Mining Applications & Current Trends • Data Warehouse & Data Lake Concepts • Big Data Analytics The job of faculty members of engineering & management courses has become quite challenging nowadays. Faculty members are expected to be effective teachers as well as active researchers. One can cover an extensive amount of course material in a day and deliver lectures after lectures, but if students do not follow the contents of lecture, whole exercise is sheer waste of time and energy. Being an effective teacher is not just about sharing knowledge; it is about making sure that learners truly grasp and integrate the knowledge delivered; and also learner are developing capacity to derive learning out of it. Any teaching that does not result in effective learning is useless. Therefore, faculty members need to be able to deliver the knowledge using the most suitable pedagogical tools to be an effective teacher. Also, an effective teacher is expected to regularly keep himself/ herself at the frontiers of knowledge in his/her areas of subject expertise and gain working knowledge of current technological trends. Faculty members need also to keep engaged in research in his own area of expertise as well as in interdisciplinary subjects. This Faculty Development Programme (FDP) was aimed at honing the teaching and research skills of prospective, new and seasoned faculty members, researchers and trainers.Participants after attending this FDP should have: • understood the significance of the fundamental elements of effective teaching and learning; • got motivated to use tools, techniques and case methods of teaching in appropriate learning contexts; • became aware of requisite preparations for the successful use of case based approach; • developed an attitude for teaching students keeping in view the job requirements in the industry so as to make them employable. • been able to understand and adopt pedagogical tools & techniques for teaching and learning; • became aware about research methodologies and insight on writing good research proposals; • got basic understanding of qualitative and quantitative data analysis tools and techniques; • got motivated to identify inter-disciplinary areas of research; • got a basic understanding of writing good research papers as per guidelines of reputed research journals;got an overview of the current technological trends and its applications.
